Why record the paint first
Paint protection film sits on top of the paint. It does not repair chips, scratches or old repairs that are already there, and a customer may first notice one at collection, once the car is clean and the film is on. That is why many installers inspect the paint, and correct or record it, before they start. Doing it with the customer, and both signing, means you agree on what was already there.
What to record
- Stone chips, and scratches that go beyond the clear coat.
- Previous paint repairs.
- Edges, badges, sensors and trim.
- Any existing film or wrap, and its condition.
- The panels you'll cover, and the marks that will sit under film.
The inspection
Wash, decontaminate and dry the car. Inspect under controlled light, panel by panel, from more than one angle. Dirt and fallout hide defects.
Then walk your customer through the chips and scratches the film will sit over, and record what you agreed. If they would rather have a chip touched in or a panel corrected first, this is the point to arrange it. You both sign, and at collection KeySigned puts the return photos beside the ones taken before the job.
For a paper record, print our detailing and PPF pre-inspection form. It is free, with space for the panels to be covered. Its car outline is an illustration.
How it works
Demonstration record, shortened. The car and some screens are illustrations.
The walk-round
You and your customer walk round the car together. KeySigned guides you to eight photos, one from each angle, and checks each for focus, light and framing. You mark any existing damage on the photos of that car and add a close-up.
Two signatures
You sign, then hand the iPhone to your customer, who signs the same version of the record. Any change after signing needs fresh signatures from you both.
The seal
KeySigned seals the record with a key held on your iPhone. Any later change to a photo, mark or signature shows when the record is checked. Your customer gets the record page and the .zip evidence pack, and checks the .zip in an up-to-date browser at keysigned.app/verify. Records stay on your iPhone and aren't backed up, so export the ones you need.
Each opens the checker with a demonstration record. Nothing is uploaded.

Questions
Should I inspect before or after decontamination?
After. Dirt and fallout hide defects, so inspect a clean, dry car under controlled light.
What about ceramic coating jobs?
The same walk-round applies. Record the paint with your customer after the wash and decontamination, before you correct or coat it, and both sign.
What does my customer receive?
The record page and the .zip evidence pack, by WhatsApp, email, iMessage or AirDrop. The signed PDF is inside the pack, and you can send it on its own too. With the evidence pack they can check the record in an up-to-date browser, with no account and nothing uploaded.
